Generational Art

Background

This is a school project from Zealand Business Academy in Køge.

In less than two weeks my group and I had two weeks to create an e-commerce webshop, promote it and sell some physical posters.

At the time, we had no practical knowledge to either WordPress or webshop management - but we went in head-first and took on the challenges along the way.

The concept

We struggled a lot when it comes to agreeing on a concept; it took us multiple days to finally make a breakthrough and agree on something: AI-generated art.

At the time, NFTs were gaining a lot of traction, OpenAI received a ton of funds from Microsoft and the fact that the ethics of AI generated art wasn't a mainstream discussion point made this topic very appealing, on top of that it required minimal human intervention in order to actually make these products.

Our case

We started off with a rough project plan and split up into different focus areas; the plan was to get the website online as quickly as possible so we'd be able to establish an online presence. (Little of which has been archived, unfortunately).

Within 4 days, I managed to get a webshop up and running built on WooCommerce. The backend was surprisingly simple, however, the payment system and UX elements caused a lot more trouble than we expected.

After sorting out the basics, I worked on making the website more appealing with a child theme. This was my first experience with WordPress themes, and it turned out to be an absolute nightmare! The theme we were using had no documentation at all, and we relied entirely on Chrome's developer tools throughout the entire project...

The outcome

Surprisingly, our website turned out very well! On top of this, we did manage to get a respectable online presence at the time!

However, unfortunately, we never managed to actually sell a product...

In hindsight, selling physical posters of digital art to a niche digitall obsessed audience required some steps to overcome that we didn't realize at the time...

Nevertheless, it's been a very important experience to me, and it's opened a gateway to a whole new way of approaching business concepts and actually allowed me a full insight to what it takes to run and maintain a webshop.
