Vendedruk Prototype

What's Vendedruk?

Vendedruk (Flip n' Drunk in English) is a memory game designed for private parties involving drinking. When a player matches two identical cards, they get the opportunity to challenge the rest of the contestants with the drinking game written on the cards. Instead of matching pictures, you're matching a challenge and a sense of power over your competition.

Concept Development

Project timeline

I tested a proof-on-concept made from ripped paper pieces around spring of 2021. It was a ton of fun, but the paper regularity got soaked and ruined - meaning they constantly had to be re-written.

Around summer, I "secretly" worked to elevate their game by turning it into an "actual" card game, for the sake of handing over the most epic birthday present ever.

First iteration was delivered as the birthday present autumn 2021, which sparked a lot of positive reactions and good feedback.

This was complicated...

The concept inventor's handwriting and explainations wer of very poor quality, as he initially designed the game around his presence, easily able to intervene and provide an explaination... however, I didn't have this lyxury, designing this project in relative serecy.

Just the beginning...

I expected that adjustments were needed, however, as I'd elevated the standards by such a margin, new content, A LOT of quality-control and conceptual adjustments had to take place. Annnoyingly, neither of us barely had time to work out these details, meaning development practically stalled for nearly two years.

More problems...

I laminated the cards to make them resistant to alcohol spillage... but I didn't think of including a laminate margin to make sure *all* of the paper was covered. A "happy accident" made me realize the need to laminate all the cards individually...

Brand new opportunities

Finally, after 6 waves of amendments, we've finally landed on a solution that we're satisfied with!

The long development time has allowed me to reflect a lot on this game. Some of the challenges are annoyingly complex and often require an explanation. Considering this is a drinking game, where people's ability to process logic seize to exist, this is a major oversight. On top of this, players needs a lot of other-game-items for some of the minigames, which takes away from the appeal.

This motivated me to work on my own spin-off with strict complexity restrictions and even higher ambitions.

New visions & Spin-off

One of my new goals are to eliminate the need of external items - this will be done by designing my own game cards with unique identifiers that sets them apart from other game cards.

On top of this... I'm stick and bones and I rarely ever drink - yet I barely managed to get woozy, meaning that the game balance is quite off... so of coursed I dialed the notch a fair bit 😉

The spin-off is a work-in-progress for a relatively distant future. If this sparks your interest, don't hesitate to contact me if you want to get involved by any means.
